User Reviews for California Burrito
A friend's mother had once invited a few of us to lunch and the task that lay ahead, was in choosing the wine and chocolates. The friend pooh-poohed the idea but I insisted. In retrospect, I should have listened because lunch turned out to be barely edible. It seemed as though the mother was trying out a few new recipes and we were the lab mice. There was either too much salt, or very little, and the fish was cooked till it had the texture of wet tissues. Of course, decorum demanded that I praise the repast to the highest heavens and I averred that I was truly blessed to have encountered food so gloriously assembled, and I praised her sublime culinary skills.
Of course, when one pays for food, at a restaurant, no such restraint should be expected.
A drink beckoned and one needed to fortify oneself for the rigours that it entails, and finding oneself in Koramangala, a quick, simple, inexpensive, non-fast food chain establishment was desired. Lazeez came into view but I didn't quite fancy their delectable 'Oil with Parathas' and we espied this place. In truth, I'm not terribly enamoured by the whole tacoburritoenchiladatortillafajita method of eating, but I've had decent Tex-Mex in the past, so we entered.
The menu is the paragon of simplicity and I ordered the burrito and salad. Apart from the chicken, the fillings for the taco/ burrito are the same as the toppings for the salad. Sure why not: spicy chicken, a bit of guacamole, something that bore a passing resemblance to cheese, jalapenos, salsas, pico gallo (a kind of salsa) and beans. Salad was a few leaves of lettuce and pretty much the same toppings.
What I got was a roomali roti with chopped vegetables, a spoonful of rajma and chicken that had apparently flown away after being served. I've encountered burritos before and though they're firmly anchored at base camp level, at the mountain of gastronomy, this was quite an accomplishment. Apparently a few Americans decided to open these outlets here, since employment is rather hard to come by back home. Yay, yippee for us.
All the toppings/ fillings were only a small spoonful and one got the distinct feeling that asking for more, was a bit like what Oliver Twist did. I got a spoonful of chicken and it might have been softened bark, perhaps soya chunks or even thermocol. Who can tell ? Salsa always has a bite to it, its flavours are cheerful, vibrant and chirpy, a bowl of it resides permanently in my fridge and it frequently appears at dinners and parties. Well, these guys did to the salsa what the Russians did to Chechnya. If a Mexican ate this, he would repeatedly throw himself on a large, prickly cactus then and rub himself with salt and lemon afterwards. It's the same with the rest of what we had the distinct misfortune to eat. The guacamole had no hint of avocado and might have been a paste of talcum powder and besan flour. The Boysenberry drink was a surefire way to attract diabetes and had an unworldly colour and taste. I was hoping that it would wash away the memory of what I had just eaten but I needed a Coke to wipe away the memory of that woeful drink.
I am desperately trying to quit smoking, I really am, and prior to the meal I had eschewed nicotine for about a week. After the ordeal of the meal, I had no choice but to ask my friend for a cigarette.
So, I love anything fresh and fun. And thats exactly what this place looked like from outside. So I went in to try out their food. I love mexican food. Being a vegetarian in the US for my college, I used to live on Chipotle and this sounded very similar to that !
The place does not disappoint. Nice bright interiors, friendly staff and of course delicious mexican food. I had a burrito and my friend has the chefs bowl. I was very happy with the quantity and the freshness of the food. Dont know if it was me reliving my college days or what but I had a wonderful lunch there a couple of days ago. :)
Will definitely go back there soon ! :)
Situated near Jyothi Nivas college, Koramangala, the restaurant is not difficult to spot. The ambiance is well lit and loud, and speaks out about the place. I am not talking about service as it is self service here. Talking about food, there are not many varieties. they only have tacos, nachos, burritos, salad, and chefs bowl. The important part is that, whatever you choose, the filling or topping will be similar. They only have three varieties of chicken and two varieties in veg i.e. paneer. Also, the options of drinks are also very few.
We had ordered for one burrito with bbq chicken and one chefs bowl with spicy chicken. The bbq chicken was really sweet and may not be relished by everyone. The spicy chicken was very mild and the level of spiciness as low. But, talking about the taste, the toppings were fresh and it was good for a change. Simple food which is refreshing and light on the stomach. But yes, dont expect it to be served hot. We had also taken Mexican sunrise. I would suggest go for a soft drink instead.
I would rate this place as:
Value for money: 3.5/5
Saw it on mt last visit to Huanan. Located on a street which is crammed with food options, it is a welcome change.what u get here is "make your own burritos/tacos and salads".The ingredients are same , you can either choose to have them in a burrito or a salad , a taco or over a bowl oh nachos.
The pricing is very good and for 150/- for the non veg option , you get to put everything on offer inside you tacos/burritos/salad, except for guacamole and cheese , which cost extra. The concept is neat , the food fresh and tasty.
As a side order we also took a bag of nachos which at 29/- was great. What we got was a paper bag with lots of freshly made nachos inside.
As also pointed in earlier reviews a place like this needs knowledgeable servers which is not really the case here.the guy at the billing counter was utterly confused. We took an extra serving of guacamole which as per the menu is rs 10/-, but we were charged 20.On inquiry the reason given was that the server had put 2 spoons instead of 1, which is ridiculous considering the same was never communicated to us.
overall a nice place to grab a meal ,without waiting through the rigors of ordering and waiting. The quality and freshness of the food is above average. They also do score highly on the value for money scale.
Surely recommended !
The similar rating this time around as well. Am posting this review as this time i went around to the place instead of ordering at home as we usually do. The place is very well situated, right opposite California Pizza Kitchen and near Jyoti Niwas College. The place is where earlier Costa was. The place is very nicely done up and looks like one of the cool fast food joints you would see abroad. The place is big with good seating.
Now comes the important part, getting across to the people making your burrito, taco, nacho or a salad. This place follows the subway concept where you can tell them how to make your food and make it according to how you like it. However, they people serving at this place do not understand this concept themselves. So the minute you say you want a burrito, they just start putting everything in without even asking you if you would like a particular thing. At least at Subway they ask if you want everything. Also the staff is not well educated about what the food is all about, they definitely do not answer questions properly. Also the person at the till messed up my bill and I had to get it sorted. They also have a double your toppings concept, but they don't tell you anything about it. Mexican food is still a bit of a novelty in India, so it would help if the staff is well educated about what they are exactly service. Not really happy about the service at all.
Then finally got my food, got a burrito, tacos, a salad bowl and a pink lemonade. The pink lemonade was nice and fresh with some chat masala. Burrito was well stuffed and salad bowl was very nice as well. The food was fantastic and I would definitely recommend trying it out to everyone. It can be made healthy as well if you do not want to add cheese and sour cream.
Would definitely keep eating here, but not sure if I would come back and eat at the restaurant. Maybe just ordering at home is a good idea as long as you don't mind the numerous phone calls they make to get to your house. A great value for money as well and they have definitely localized the cuisine to add paneer. However, it just doesn't work for me and i would stick to the fajitas.
