User Reviews for Barbeque Nation
And what shall I say to this place which has not been said. Interesting but I just couldn't claim to be a foodie and yet not review one of the best places to eat in Chennai (at the moment at least). so here goes
We ended up during one of the working day afternoon and the surroundings are nothing to talk about. But that's nothing to do with the hotel what with the road widening and the subsequent confusions in parking space. The entrance to the hotel is also kinda weird and spooky with a long tunnel to the dingy elevators. Hmmm...not what is expected. But once you get inside - you're ushered into a different world. In many ways it is quaint and a bit rustic which makes you visualise overgrown men in animal skins and long uncut hairs chomping off juicy chunks of meat.
The maitre'd efficiently swished us into our seats - designed specifically for the job at hand. Quick check by the maitre'd on the number of veggies and meaties. While this check was due to the difference in prices between both, it was also to have the appropriate colored plates placed in front of the veggie (green color) and meaties (black). Nice little touch...
Once the minor formalities were completed...it was time for literally the meat and potatoes - so they load in the portable grills and bring in the skewers laden with the various assortment of meats, fruits and vegetables. It's almost looks like military planes running mutiple sorties carrying food and landing them in the right places. The service was almost poetic with the skewers flying-in gracefully and the food disappearing off the skewers almost at lightning speed (though not as gracefully).
On the food, the fare on the hearth was chicken peri peri, mutton sheek, fish, shrimps, chicken tangri, pineapple, potato, mushroom, corn, paneer (phew). I'm sure I missed a couple but you get the idea. The fish, tangri, mutton, pineapple, mushroom, paneer, corn were fantastic. The fish was just too yummy and was the one ordered the most.
Well after the deluge of the barbeque starters you really wouldn't want to stir up from your seats to wobble out to the buffet area but if you do...it's actually good. The briyani however was a bit off-taste (apologies couldn't make out due to the onslaught on the taste buds by the barbeque starters). The buffet fare comprised 2-3 veggie dishes and 2-3 meat dishes (which were actually good). The dessert counter was also given a miss but I hear that they were good and I wouldn't be wrong to endorse that, with the way the rest of the buffet spread has been.
Overall a real fantastic experience and though this is my visit to a Barbeque Nation after many years now, I can still see that they make sure you don't walk out the way you walked in - you will find it hard to walk out after been bombarded with tasty starters and buffet spread. Fantastic effort to keep up the quality consistently and it's no wonder that this place happens to be one of the best places to eat in Chennai.
The high-chair for children that was available was a bit on the wrong size when compared to the rest of the furniture - making the child-managers a bit grumpy.
The biryani could have been better - phew.
I went to BBQ nation for a tuesday.. We were around 25 people and we had reserved a table in advance.
we started with the starters..We had chicken, Fish, prawns and the special Tangdi kebab(chicken leg).. I had no clue of the veg starters as i never went to the vegetarian table :)
The Tangdi kebab was out of the world..I had around 3 chicken legs..Highlight among the starters was the fish..It was soft and grilled to perfection..Don't remember when i had so much fish last time.. The main course was average..however Barbeque nation is known for it's starters and please go there with the intention of filling yourself with starters alone..
Main course and desserts were average.. some vegetarians weren't happy looking at their faces..Non vegetarians kept burping away to glory which more or less summarizes the variety non vegetarians have here.. The restaurant was pretty spacious and service was fantastic.. overall ambience was great.. I prefer the vadapalani one over the T.nagar bbq nation..
I was meaning to write a review on Barbeque Nation for quite sometime now. But,I thought I will wait till I visit it again, to write a review of an experience that was still fresh on my mind. The opportunity presented itself last Wednesday when I could drop into this place with a few of my associates and friends. I have visited Barbeque Nation T. Nagar a number of times in the past for both office and family get-togethers, but this was my first time at the branch (or franchise) at Vadapalani. We did not have a reservation and we had to wait for 15 minutes before we could be ushered in from the reservation/ waiting area to our tables. The waiting area was decent and had chairs, we did not feel very uncomfortable sitting out the 15 odd minutes till we got our table.
Walking into the restaurant, I was taken aback by how huge it was. In the back we could see the flames and embers rising from the live grills were the chefs were busy grilling the starters behind the glass windows that separated the kitchen from the dining area. This added to the mood and the sense of drama within the restaurant. There was a small stage of sorts in the restaurant, it kind of felt like a Karoke setup with a mike and some speakers. We were told that a live band performs in the stage at times. Loud music was blaring through the restaurants speakers and it seemed like a deliberate attempt to convey the message to the patrons that this restaurant is all about having fun and getting stuffed with food - unfortunately no room for the broken-hearted , romantic or the people who want to have a quite conversation in this restaurant.
All tables in the restaurant have a charcoal grill - this is where the pre-grilled starters are loaded onto metal skewers. The open charcoal grills apparently do not serve any functional purpose as the food loaded on them is already nicely grilled. The only purpose they serve is to add an element of drama. There is nothing like sitting and dinning around an open flame - it wakes up the primeval instincts within us. But, everyone loves this - I loved it. This touch enhances the dining experience exponentially.
Diners have the option of opting for non-vegetarian or vegetarian starters. The plates are color coded - brown for non-vegetarian and green for vegetarian. From my past experiences I can safely declare that the vegetarian starters are just as good as the non-vegetarian. This time around we all opted for non-vegetarian. Diners also have the option of deciding on the spice levels of the offerings. If some group wants it hot and spicy or if some group wants it mild they can convey this to the Maitre d' and the food will be served accordingly. This again is a nice touch especially useful if you are entertaining guests from abroad who are not accustomed to spicy food.
As soon we were seated the Maitre d' announced himself to us and revealed to us that the first round of drinks were on the house. That was a nice touch . We were entitled to one round of free cola, mocktails, fruit juices or a beer. The Maitre d' needs a special mention as he was always around waiting on us.
The first thing we were served with was a potato salad (probably to fill us up ;) ) , even before the starters were loaded on the grill. We were served with the following starters all loaded on the grill - grilled prawns ,hariyali fish, grilled paneer (tikka style), grilled mushrooms and potatoes, and grilled ripe pineapples. Apart from this chicken drumsticks cooked tandoori style, mutton mughlai sheek was served to us along with adraki paneer. They also served button mushrooms probably marinated, seasoned and grilled to perfection.
The prawns were the biggest prawns I have seen in a while it was seasoned to perfection and as soon as I took the first bite it was plainly obvious that the prawns were sourced absolutely fresh. The grilled fish was another beauty it was so soft and tender it melted in my mouth. Though I did not want to be loaded with the potato salad in the start it too was a revelation in itself as the dressing was amazing and the potatoes were wonderfully prepared to pop in you mouth and melt away.
The paneer too needs a special mention I think as it was amazing. It was soft and the flavor was perfect. The mutton mughlai sheek was over-spiced that it masked the flavor of the meat -the only dish that was below par that night. The chicken dishes were all good and tender, no over grilling here as they were all perfectly cooked to be juicy and moist.
The starters kept flowing in till we told them not to bring anymore. We could barely lift ourselves off of our chairs and head to the main course section. This section was also well stocked. There was beautiful biriyani and a lot of other sides. I am very sure that the main course buffet was well stocked than most other pricey buffets in town. I settled for dessert and had the gulab jamuns along with vanilla ice cream and cheese cake. The cheese cake was great it was nice and crumbly and would have done any baker proud.
Verdict - Not expensive as one might assume it to be. An experience not to be missed.
Service - 5
Food - 5
Mood, environment and ambiance - 5
Had a great time yesterday with my friends here.Reached the place by 2 and we just waited fr 5 mins without any reservations.
The starters are served real quick we had a chicken ,two fish, prawn bbq which is osm as usual with 5 sauces a tomato with ginger,a mango and some white sauce which is made from fresh cream. We asked for mayonnaise and ordinary tomato sauce .
Mutton sheekh kebab ,veg cutlet was served with pudhina chutney,we also asked for spicy corn which is osm with tomato sauce.
Chicken fry (leg) was served too and all the items were osm,the second serving was a bit too late but after that all were served quickly.we went for 5 servings of all d starters.
The spread was nice for veg not great for nonveg in the main course ,we had a olive corn pulao, gobi manchurian, fried aloo, dal makhani, papad, indian roti on demand ,bitterguard fried (that's the best bitterguard i have tasted in years) and Paneer butter masala.
For non veg it's just a biriyani with chicken gravy , mutton gravy and an egg gravy.
Desert's had a moderate spread with two icecreams with 4 sauces ,a cheese cake kinda ,brownie, cookies and two creamy chocolate with gulabjamuns.
The waiter's and the managers were so attentive and courteous ,always been around taking orders.
And we also been served a strawberry and liche drink which was quite ordinary.I opted for lime soda and that was quite osm.
A bit concerned how they will manage on weekends as this place is bigger than t.nagar and we waited for our second servings for about 10 mins on a weekday.
A great place for food lovers
0.5 reduced for the main course and 0.5 fr the waiting time .
The Chili Fish Postulation:
Barbeque nation is among the very few restaurants can lay the claim of being the best in the city. What keeps this place apart from all the others is that this restaurant has a little bit of something for everybody. You are sure not to be disappointed when you walk inside for a meal. Also, this characteristic ensures that when a group of people walk in, everybody has a good time. This unique setting ensures that barbecue nation is booked up always.
I have been here several times, all of which were group get together parties of some sort. All those items, this place has given us fun memories to remember by and reminisce. An all-round buffet that covers most bases, a delectable dessert counter and most importantly the superb starters, these are usually the reasons cited by most for haunting this place. But beyond all these the restaurant delivers on a few other subtle fronts too.
The motley gang got together to catch up and mourn another year of being alone on Valentine's eve at the Vadapalani branch. We hoped to binge on food to get over the mourning, hence the choice of restaurant. As we had already booked a table, we were ushered in without further ado. The supervisor walked over to make sure that we were comfortable and promised us that we could have our food prepared and spiced specifically if we had any preferences. This was asked in spite of the restaurant being fully packed.
Apart from the usual series of starters that they usually serve, the chef had prepared a batch of a special Chili Fish starter. I heard from the sea food lovers that it was really divine and tasted different. I usually stay away from sea food due to my allergy to prawns. But I was eventually coerced into trying some. It turned out to be as good as they lead me believe. Even though I am so expert on sea food, I did find the dish, with its different taste to be quite delicious. The fish was hot in demand all over the restaurant.
Our group was one the last ones to start on the main course, when the kindly supervisor came back to ensure that things were alright. One of the self-confessed sea food fanatics' s enquired whether the chili fish was still available. He told us that he would enquire in the kitchen and get back. He came back two minutes later saying that since it was specially made that day in small quantity, the batch of chili fish was over. He told us that the kitchen was preparing a new batch from scratch since we had asked and promised to bring in 20 mins. We politely declined saying that the restaurant need not stretch on the account of us, but the supervisor would not hear any of it. And lo, as promised a freshly prepared batch of chili fish was delivered 20 mins later by the supervisor himself. Half of us had already finished main course and started eating dessert. The remaining guys and the sea food fanatic could only manage to finish half as the portion size was really huge. The restaurant did not have any qualms about us wasting a huge portion of the fish. The supervisor was only keen that we had a nice meal.
While in the dessert counter, one of our gang accidently dropped a brownie into the kheer. Promptly the batch of kheer was replaced. No questions asked. The hospitality of the staff oozes of utmost professionalism. They even refuse tips.
Beyond the good food and good ambience I find that this professionalism leads to a complete and gratifying meal experience that can be rarely found. It's the small things like the chili fish incident that really makes the biggest of the differences. And that is why I will keep going back to this place.
Kudos to the entire team!
Ambience: 4.5/5 (loud and boisterous yet enjoyable)
p.s: book a table well in advance to avoid disappointment
