User Reviews for 1857 (Ohri's)
Ohris - A name we mostly relate to theme based dinning. Every place acquired by Ohris group has a unique concept. Various dinning across the city are in multiple formats such as coffee shops, food courts, fine dines, casual dines, kiosks, pubs, lounges and cafes. As put forward by one of my friend they have captured the essence of place and people surrounding that area and built the whole thing accordingly.
1857 is another gem in their crown which carries the essence of Nawab era in Hyderabad. Once you enter the place, you will notice beautiful decor all done in white color. Its completely open from all sides hence in evening you will feel wonderful breeze specially tables facing towards Hussain Sagar. The bar area has many interesting carvings from Nawab era. some pictures similar to what I found in Chowmahala place. The whole place looks like you have entered Nawab palace at that time. Completely loved its ambiance.
Now coming to food, for starters we ordered Ajwaini Fish Tikka, Paneer tikka, chatpata jaljeera (some lemon based mock-tail) and some beer. Fish tikka was well cooked and fish was tender and soft. Paneer tikka was one of the best I had in town. Flavorsome, soft and wonderful taste. Only thing which was unimpressive was Mocktail. I expected a much better mocktail but it was more like Nimbu pani we had at home only with some chat masala added to it. So apart from that both veg and non-veg starters were good.
Earlier we were in impression that 1857 serves only Indian style food but came to know that it serves the gourmets of the finest Indian and International Cuisines serving authentic and contemporary taste. So for main course, I felt like trying both. We ordered Mutton Jahangiri with Nan and Mushroom sizzler. To be very frank, we were quite satisfied with quantity, quality as well as finest taste offered.
Sizzler was well cooked plus it was overflowing with crumbling cheese which melted in mouth and was like wows and aahs moment full of taste. I was delighted by presentation and taste of sizzler. The mutton gravy ordered was definitely best in the town with tender mutton pieces. Totally finger licking tasty. Overall a happy tummy experience.
Their service was quite decent as well. The staff was decent and courteous. Even though we were last to leave, but they keep coming and asking for us for order. Even when kitchen was about to close, waiter came to ask for last order. Liked their service. Only thing is that it is little heavy on pocket.
The total food without desserts cost us more than 3k. So my overall rating for this place goes like:-
this is a great place to share drinks and meet friends while overlooking the beautiful Hussain Sagar Lake... I had been to this restaurant so many times and I love it for its ambience and setting... It provides a distinct feel of British Raj era in the setting and the way drinks and food are served...
There might be chances that on few weekends you might not find a place immediately and a booking might be required in advance... Yet there is a certain sense of uniqueness to this place and its setting... While overlooking the necklace road at a distance, it gives you time to immerse yourself into the beauty of Hussain Sagar while tasting great food... The starters are great here and I would highly recommend everyone to try it while they order for their drinks...
While its difficult to immerse yourself in the food when you are around with your friends catching up on a lot of stuff, this place would really capture you imagination for the cocktails and the achari murg tikka... The fish dishes are also equally good and what stands out is the chicken dishes and mutton biryani...
If you want to hang around with your friends accompanied by serene ambience while traveling back in time to the erstwhile British Raj era, I would highly recommend 1857 as the ultimate stop!
I would recommend a visit to 1857 if you are looking to relax in a different atmosphere with close friends or family. The restaurant' waiters dress in period costumes from when the British were in India and you can sit either in cane chairs or under a mosquito netting like cover at a table overlooking the necklace road. The overall effect is very relaxing. If you drink, they combine coriander, mint and other herbs with vodka for some enjoyable and unusual cocktails. Rotis are very good and I enjoyed the Ajiwani fish tikka with some rumali roti.
Situated at a stones throw distance from the Hussain Sagar lake, 1857 is built at a strategic location. Also as a Ohri's trademark, a different ambience from the other Ohri's restaurants. A visit to 1857 is like a visiting a royal dining area except for the stench that emanates from Hussain Sagar sometimes. The moment you step into the restaurant you are greeted by pleasant white colour. It comes to you like a breath of fresh air. It is totally open from all sides but coverd from the top so you can sit in any season and at any time of the day.
They have arranged the seating in such a way that you can have a nice cosy time with if you are a couple or have a blast if you are a bigger group. The staff will not need to make too many changes to accomadate different sizes.
The staff as usual is courteous and service is good, but the best part is the food. I have been a multiple times here and have always liked the starters, infact so much that I just dont order main course here.
I have also seen their menu change from the newspaper to a booklet :).
I went to 1857 last week as I wanted to take my brother-in-law who had come from US and wanted to taste some nice kebabs. Since he had already been to places such as BBQ Nation, I felt that this was the best place where I may not need to compramise on hygene (I know there are far better kebab places but hygene was imortant factor here).
We ordered Ajwaini Fish Tikka, Chicken Malai Kabab and Lal Mirch Tangdi and butter Nan to go with that. Fish was awesome the spices had penetrated quite well and there was no smell at all in the fish. The chicken as usual was very nicely char grilled. The pieces were quite big and we actually had to cut them into two and divide amongst ourselves. The tangdi kabab again was awesome, I dont think I can describe in words the taste of food. The only thing I can say is that the it was a very very fulfilling experience.
One thing about the ambience, it is very difficult to maintain a white ambience esecially when you have used a huge amount of cloth. Its commendable that they have been able to maintain it for so long, but the signs of dirt are showing and I could also see some dar patches on the upholstrey in the restaurant. It is important for any restaurant to make sure that these things are taken care of.
I visited this place with a bunch of friends on a cool windy evening, and it was worth it.
Open air space with princely wrought iron chair sitting, white drapes and candles, paintings, white lighting, artistic fans and amzing food, this place has it all. We ordered for chicken and veg platters and kababs, all were wonderfully done and garnished. The main course was good too, number of options in naan and rotis. Vegans have much less options than the non-veg eaters.
The cocktails are worth a try and they are available in number of flavors and mixes. The food takes little more time to arrive if crowd is more but reasonably fine.Courteous staff and prompt service.
On weekends, this place has also started up with their karaoke nights which are fun if you are with a group of people but it may leave you pretty irritated listening to all the naive singers trying out to turn budding singers.!
Apart from this, everything else just falls in place,I had a good time here.
