User Reviews for Over The Moon - Hotel Daspalla
“Over the Moon” was one of those places that several friends recommended me to visit. Somehow, it never happened. At last, I made up my mind and went to this place with a bunch of friends sometime back.
It was my first time at this restaurant. At the outset, I was bowled over by the ambiance. It is very classy and elegant indeed. We were too keen to explore in and around the restaurant and we just did it. It was a Saturday and hence we realized there was a dance floor on t he left side of the entrance to the building. I am not too impressed with the dance floor. It was just OK. I am not a fan of the music that was played. I went ahead to t he roof top. I loved the view from the roof-top – It was truly marvelous. We decided to go back to the lounge, sit and relax. So we went back to the lounge. After exploring the place, we were relatively tired. It was time for us to order food and drinks.
We called one of the employees to help us with the food and drink menu and let us know what the best he can suggest us. I wonder why i ever did such a mistake. He went on to tell me about each and every dish including both vegetarian and non vegetarian. We had to stop him because he couldn’t follow that we actually asked a suggestion and we didn’t want him to tell us the entire list of dishes. So we had to figure it out ourselves. We ordered a sea food platter and veg spring rolls apart from Beer, tequila shots and vodka. Why would a sea food platter have chicken was my first question? I never knew chicken was a sea animal/bird. :D . There was no answer but just a stupid smile. Am I supposed to say something? It wasn’t all that great. Tasteless and bland. The veg cheese spring roll was one of the worst spring roll that I have had in ages. Very rubbery and I was actually wondering where did the cheese vanish? Wasabi prawns is a must try! When you order food, ensure you check what’s been given because when you are with a bunch of friends and it’s evening time, you don’t really bother much about what’s been given. We asked for some broccoli dish and we got something else. Every time, we were served drinks, we had to tell them we needed cold water.
Employees need to be trained on what is there in the menu and what it means. They are not aware of anything and how would you expect them to give suggestions to people? Service is nothing great. For the prices, I would expect an amazing service and food. No value for money.
As a true foodie, i would not recommend this place unless they plan to mend their ways on providing good service and good food and relevant food and cater to customer needs. Training is very much needed for these folks.
Bad service, Overly priced for the service offered, Food is nothing great - If your experience is great here, you must be lucky!
I'm writing this review after reading a host of bad ones on display and am seriously wondering if I dodged a bullet.
Went to this place in Aug (on a Saturday night)and I must say that iIhad a completely different, positive experience than the ones of the people in the reviews given below.
The place is very charming and is an absolute delight as far as the ambiance and the view go. Music is a bit loud though, wonder what they had in mind when they opened the place. We sat on the top floor for a while and had to shift downstairs because of a heavy downpour. The staff courteously got our drinks and food and ensured that we got the seating of our choice. No complaints so far!
Food was again a hit with my friend and me. He ordered fish, which he said was perfectly cooked and my veggie dish (can't remember the name) was nice too. The cocktail ordered was the best that I've had but then I held onto my one drink, s I didn't want to spend more on what I was barely enjoying.
Service...well, I didn't have any payment issues as such. I always use a credit card and hence I verified the bill, which was perfect (in spite of the moving from one floor to another). The waiter we had was attentive and courteous.
My only complaint was that there were a bunch of really really loud people in the adjacent table, whose noise levels made me want to plunge the fork on their knees.
Else, I had a perfect evening. The place has great ambiance, decent food and drinks. It is a little heavy on the pocket but the the ambiance makes up for that and can cut the slack for a few occasions.
Would i recommend OTM? YES, definitely!
Beautifull ambience and decor. Island bar, elevated DJ console, projector screen, glass walls, high french open windows with flowy white drapes, high ceiling, low comfortable seating and an impressive show kitchen.
I didnt appreciate the host recommending the floor above which is dingy, shady and very unlike the floor below. It had no music and had couples in coze... not a sight on a Friday night.
So we choose to sit at the bar. The drink menu is nothing to be raved about. We opted for a straight drink, a cocoktail called death by chocolate and a beer. The bar tenders are very friendly and courteous. We had a staff who approached us every 30 mins to show us a bar trick. I wish he had timed it though as he would just intrupt a conversation of three women catching up after ages... The bar stools are not very comfortable to be moved to sit comfortable as no chair assistance is rendered.
The food is over priced and not quantitative. The quality of the chicken on the platter and the prawns were succulent but the mutton and fish didnt fit the bait. With the show kitchen tastefully done I expected a bit more creativity in the food taste and presentation.
I would still go to OTM for the bar tenders and maybe for a drink and a bite but wouldnt stay too long as the place seemed pretty empty for a Friday night while the music was good for a night club experience, the crowd wasnt the sort who would want to shake a leg...
EDITED - SEE BELOW!! (Original Post) I was here last night (Friday 23 2013) with the Twin Cities Expatriates Association (TEA) group for their Fourth Friday rooftop drinks night. Anybody that knows me knows that I am not a complainer by nature... but this needs to be brought up. I know some ex-pats that refuse to go to the Daspalla and now I know the reason why!!
Here's the story as it transpired: I got there and asked the waiter what kind of Scotch they had. He said "Dewar's" - and I asked "Is that all?" and he said yes...that was the only one. So I ordered one - a single - on the rocks. He brought me a glass with ice and professionally poured one shot over the ice. So-far-so-good.
Then he said "That will be Rs. 1,100.00, sir." I said "FOR A SINGLE SHOT?? What about the TEA 15% discount??" He said that was the discounted price. I gave him 2 Rs 1,000.00 notes and asked for my change. I turned to my wife and said "This is a $20.00 shot of cheap blended Scotch whisky - and it will be my last!!"
We were asked to move because we were blocking the aisle... so we did.... but not before I said "I'm not leaving without my change!" and asked my waiter for my Rs. 900.00. He said no problem, he would bring it to me.
So I'm standing with my wife and two other friends from Deloitte. They all ordered another drink and asked if I wanted one. I said "not at $20.00 a shot!!" They said no worries...that they would put it on their tab. So the NEW waiter brings a shot with a separate glass of ice like the first drink... and took my old glass away.
Less than a minute passes and the FIRST waiter (who still had not brought me my Rs. 900.00 change!) walked up to me and said that I owed Rs. 400.00 additional now for the "second drink". First of all - even if I DID owe...it would be Rs. 200.00 - NOT Rs. 400.00!! Secondly, I told him no... this one was on a new tab...and asked him again to just bring me my change. He walked away and didn't come back.
My wife then said let's have one more drink and go... I said no... you have one and I'll sit at the bar with you. We sit at the bar and asked the man pouring drinks for a glass of wine...AND MY CHANGE!! We made sure that they knew it was on the other tab... and not to start a new one. It took forever, but she finally got her wine.
While we are sitting there, the bartender pours three HUGE glasses of JOHNNY WALKER BLACK LABEL without measuring... with ice on the side... (I'd say that judging from my single, these were triples at least - and very probably quadruples). The waiter then took these drinks to the table full of Indian young people over by the stairs. Of course I didn't catch the price charged... But I'll guarantee they were not charging Rs. 4,400.00 for a glass of Scotch!!
First of all.... they obviously had more Scotch than Dewar's... but I guess us lowly ex-pats don't deserve the good stuff. Secondly, we had reserved the entire upstairs/rooftop for the TEA group and this was obviously ot honored by the people at Daspalla. Now I was truly angry and I stared at the manager guy behind the bar and told him "bring me my god-damned change NOW!!!"
We waited about five minutes and my original waiter came up from behind us with... are you ready? A Rs. 500.00 note!!
By then I was so frustrated and pissed off (my wife had to stop me from going postal there on the roof!) that I just put the money in my wallet and said "get me outta here". I was tired of arguing with them and tired of their bullshit.
If these people intend to treat us this way and don't need our business...I suggest that we have no more TEA events at Daspalla. I will say this publicly and await any commentary or rebuttal....THEY ARE THIEVES and I will NEVER walk into that hotel ever again...and I will suggest to anybody that asks to do likewise.
Here endeth the rant.
Over the moon....certainly takes you on top of it. I was so surprised to find a place like this in Hyderabad! Located on the 8th floor of Hotel Daspalla this place is definitely here to stay. The ambience is amazing and keep in mind the weather in Hyderabad at the moment, it is THE place to be. The music is brilliant and they are open till 1, it's difficult to find such a place now. Don't expect too much from the service point, just got there with friends to enjoy and let yourself loose!
