User Reviews for Bijoli Grill
Bijoligrill ! For me and a lot of Calcuttans, it is synonymous with delectable fish fry, chicken cutlet and tasty Chinese food !
Honestly I have grown up having fish fry, fish orly, chicken cutlet and chinese from this popular joint located in the lane adjacent to Bijoli Cinema hall in Bhowanipore. May be thats where it has got its name from.
This is no place for fine dining, previously this used to be the upper class of all the cafe type joints found in and around Kolkata. Atleast for my father and uncles, this was the favourite joint for an adda session over cha (tea) and some great snacks!
I am slightly biased towards Bijoligrill since it is located in my neighborhood and have tried almost all the items from the menu. When Kolkata did not have so many restaurants in every nook and corner, Bijoligrill was a hit with people residing in Tollygunje to Chowringhee ! There was a time when all the big fat Bengali weddings were catered by Bijoligrill. Unfortunately that was a thing of the past. Now you find countless number of joints serving chop, cutlet and chinese which is pretty decent in taste and an affordable price.
At present Bijoligrill is still the same with very basic ambiance, non air conditioned with few tables cramped in which can hardly accommodate 15 people. It is mainly a take away which gets busy in the evenings. Must try items here are the Fish fry, fish roll, the chicken and fish kabiraji, chicken cutlet. You can also try out chinese but the quality has deteriorated and it is at par with other joints serving Indianised chinese.
The fish items have become quite costly as I tried the fish roll recently. It costs Rs120 and has very less amount of fish in it. Though the quality is good, it does not justify the price. Chicken cutlet is really good priced at Rs60.
A meal for two should not cost more than Rs 450. You can give it a try sometime. A 3.5 from my end, Bijoligrill will always be a favourite just for the fact that I have grown up having food from here :)
This place is situated in a narrow lane beside Bijoli cinema and Bhawanipur police station. The place is renowned for its fish fries, fish rolls, fish orleys and kabirajis. These preparations of Bijoli grill are far better than what you will find in any other typical fast food joint.
The quality of the fish is very good.Their fish rolls are unique in the stuffing they provide.Other than these the place also provides chinese items and Bengali fast food items which are decent but nothing special. The prices are decent and the service is swift.
There is nothing much to write home about the ambience. The place can accommodate about 10-15 people. There is no air conditioning facility even.So this is no place for fine dining.
I have had food from here for a long time now.The quality of the food has gone down quite a bit of late. The amount of fish in the rolls, the thickness of the fish fillets have decreased. But still this is a place where you can expect a certain standard.
It gives me great pleasure to introduce to the Zomatians this restaurant, which served as my lunch destination for three years, while I was in college. Just ahead of Hazra crossing, in the lane adjacent to Bijoli Cinema is this place, Bijoli Grill- the restaurant. One wont even notice it if its not pointed out, but by my reckoning, it serves some of the best food I have eaten so far, and at dirt cheap prices. Primarily serving Chinese cuisine, the hot favourites at this restaurant are Mixed chowmein, mixed fried rice, lemon chicken, chilli chicken, and sweet and sour chicken. The menu has very few items, but all the dishes are quality dishes, with portions enough to satisfy even the most voratious of eaters. Also available are vegetable, chicken and fish chops, the size of which is thrice the size of chops we get at ordinary fast food joints. The menu also consists of trademark Bijoli Grill dishes like Butter fish fry (Fish cooked in butter and fried in a crispy bread batter), Cutlets, and how can I not mention the kabirajis. A kabiraji is a Bengali fast food dish. It comprises a choice of meat, which is spiced and cooked, following which it is deep fried after coating with breadcrumbs. Now this preparation is covered with crispy threads of fried whipped egg, which yields a dish which is sinfully delightful. My favourite of the kabirajis is the prawn kabiraji, and once eaten, the taste would probably haunt you for the rest of your life.
Though this restaurant does not have a great star class ambience,or even an AC and seats 16 people, it surely is a place worth visiting.
Tried the fish fry which one of the most talked about dishes of this place
First of all this is a small place with just a few chairs and a pretty decent decor..The fish fry was served hot wit some french fries and salad...after having the fry u will understand that this is different from the normal fries u find anyplace else...the fry is soft and big with the stuffing which is very very fresh...the best thing is that after having the fry thought ur stomach dosent feel heavy but ur taste buds feel satisfied ..The price is just one factor that will prevent me from going to this place on a weekly basis
Bijoli Grill for me conjours up visions of Fish Fry and is a little bit of my growing up years in Kolkata ! Its not fine - dining by a long stretch and the piece of fish is a litlle smaller and a little thinner than it used to be but nevertheless its still something that turns back the clock for me. The chilli prawn and fish orly as well as the cutlets are still good for the occasional snack.
