No change isn't necessarily a good thing
An excellent ambiance and an extremely courteous staff that usually provides for a good, peaceful dinner is what keeps me coming back to this place. However, the food is still unfortunately, not quite there. While a great selection of starters builds up your appetite, you are taken to a mediocre and just palatable main course, which ends again with amazing, delicious desserts.
Surely enough, the Dips and Chips were filling, with perfectly warm and soft pita bread and crispy tortilla chips, that went best with the guacamole sauce.
The "Aakhri Pasta" (and I'm not joking)
While some of you may be offended to have compared the dish to Chunkey Pandey's forgettable role in an even more forgettable movie, bear with me while I explain. The mixed sauce penne is now almost as standard a dish as your plain cheese pizza. Something that has to be good and consistent. While I'm not saying I'm an excellent judge of food just because I'm writing here, anyone can make out a salt less, bland and tasteless dish when they taste one. And this has been the case consistently.
The Red Velvet delight
The Red Velvet cake is absolutely delicious and would make it to the top of anyone's dessert list (although I may mention the serving size has "mysteriously" decreased). Absolutely rich in every way, sometimes it does tend to taste a tad dry after a few bites, and is excellently coupled with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. While I've never been able to try their other desserts being extremely partial to this particular beauty, I've heard on more than one occasion that their desserts are amongst the best one can have.
While I'm not dissatisfied with my over all experience, I'd, in my honest humble opinion (IMHHO) say there's definitely room for improvement. I don't know when that will happen. But until then I can just say this - start with the cake.
A random plan of lunch at CPK, the iconic American pizza outlet heralding its roots from California triggered countless ripples of imagination to spread across my grey cells. So off we headed up the escalator to the Heavenly abode of Pizzas at Phoenix Sky zone.
The high ceiling with the typical industrial look devoid of any false ceilings grabs the attention quite easily. Also, the earthy brown palette seen all over in their interiors makes it intimately welcoming. We had all the time in the world to while away and CPK with its spacious soothing ambiance, good line up of music and fairly empty tables made it an ideal spot to do the same.
I had been here almost 5-6 times in the past and every time after going through the vast menu we used to zero down our options to nothing.... but Pizzas (for some reason pizzas always dominated the rest of the options)..I simply love the creativity in the pizzas here. However, this time we wanted to do things a tad differently and pushed ourselves to go for a proper 5 course meal.
The non traditional pizzas, pastas, humongous salads being created in their open live kitchen gently wafting out their aromas just fueled up more restlessness in our tummies and I just couldn't wait until I had my canines biting into them.
Having only 2 options in soups- One in Veg and one in Non-veg, left us with no option but to order the chicken chowder. It looked like porridge in terms of colour and consistency garnished with few strips of crispy tortillas. But smelled Good and one spoon was just enough for me to shut my trap and charge my taste buds into a diagnostic mode. The ingredients like chicken, corn, wild grains were all playing their parts peacefully without competing each other. What a well blended creamy chowder this was.. WOW !!.
The next one was the starter – charqui grilled chicken which was a slight let down. The grilled strips of chicken dint have any enticing flavour in comparison to the divine chowder. Also the portion seemed too small to share between two. Salad accompanied alongside also tasted very ordinary with a handful of salad leaves tossed in a ranch dressing.
Next on our agenda was a 9” Pizza and Pasta. The chosen pizza was the Meat Cravers as it had variety of meat toppings. It arrived pretty quick and looked staggering with the shades of red coming from the abundance of meat in forms of pepperoni, salami, sausages, strips of bacon, ham….Gosh we were happily chomping and enjoying the mental jig that was happening inside with each bite. I would have enjoyed it more if it was a thin crust pizza, but the attendant was honest enough to inform that with the overload of meat thin crust wont work for this particular one.
Now the pasta was confusing to choose from and after musing over the menu we opted for the fusion one called Kung pao pasta with chicken and prawns. The portion was decent enough to be shared by two and their house special kung pao sauce did the magic all the way till we were forking and fishing in the bowl for the last prawn. The taste was pleasantly different with a twist of spice and sweetness and crunchiness of onions and softness of pasta all whipped into one dish.
We had sangrias and kingfisher premium as they dint have the blue whilst gorging on the food. Sangria was good and refreshing.
For desserts we were too stuffed but nonetheless ordered a chocolate éclair from their desserts tent card. It definitely gets our vote for a light, easy-going delicious dessert completing our lunch-gluttony remarkably Perfecto !!.
Because of some repetitive minor irregularities that unfortunately occurred that day, it takes away the Crown of a Perfect Rating of 5 or even 4.5.
Basic service like refilling of water glasses had to be told repeatedly (5-6 times) throughout the meal. Cutleries had to be changed as they had some greasy stains. The chicken starter was disappointing & sangria though was refreshing enough, lacked the excellence that we expected in it. I guess it was the consistency of wine that bunged up the perfect taste.
Overall had a great time with my office buddy on a lazy afternoon. Total Damages- 2550/-
My experience at CPK is an ideal example of why you shouldn’t dismiss something based on hearsay. For the longest time, all I heard about it was that their Red Velvet Cake is brilliant (Well it is!) but everything else is just too overrated. Therefore, last week was my first visit with friends and how I regretted not going there sooner.
The food was fabulous. (Maybe I was just lucky) But this is my review and I’d give it 4/5. We had the Foccasia, Thai Crunch Salad, Masterchef Special Veg Pizza, Red Velvet Cake and Ice coolers. The quality of food was superlative. The foccasia was baked to perfection with delicate flavours and served with olive oil and garlic. When my friends ordered an expensive salad I secretly wondered (What the hell! Why would I want to eat salad) The Thai Crunch will make you love salads. It’s crunchy, zingy, light and delicious. Need I talk about a Masterchef Pizza? Well, I should cos from the look of it, I could see only greens and not much cheese. However, one bite into the super light crust, topped with succulent cherry tomatoes, parmesan cheese shavings and some other delicate greens and I was floored. We ended our gluttonous lunch with Red Velvet Cake coated with white chocolate flakes… yes it’s worth the hype.
The prices are sky high mind you, but personally I’d forgo 3 visits to any other pizza place so as to visit CPK once!
So we're here to celebrate a friend's birthday and being a group of 9 we din't get those lovely cubicles they have made. We were directed to a large table at the back whose ambience was decent. Well being starving we jumped straight away to Main Course.
We ordered their Tomato basil penne, Spicy baja fettucine (which was best amongst these) & cheese garlic penne. However the pastas weren't as tempting as their pizzas.
Next up was Baja Supreme Pizza which is great! Then we ordered a pizza that served some chipotle in the centre and well cooked cottage cheese pizza which was absolutely delicious! Later we called for Margarita..as simple as it should be it was not what we expected. I'd rather say you do away with this one. As for margarita lovers cheese should be overflowing and it wasnt quite so here! Last up was the Al Buquerque Pizza which was excellent! Highly recomment this & the one with cottage cheese & Chipotle!
Now that the food has been reviewed I'd like to comment on the service. First thing being we wer not served water for 15 mins and still had to ask for it ! I absolutely am against this basic service not being delivered. Also the service was a tad-bit slow but giving it was Friday night, it could be excusable. And they even gave us wrong change but they were prompt with clearing that out. All in all a nice place worth a visit atleast but if your the one with a big appetite and a smaller pocket think twice then!
P.S. They put realllly very little cheese and if your used to cheese bursting from your pizzas, then u might have to tell them to add more.
Damages Rs. 4780/- for three pastas, three 14" pizzas & a 9" pizza!!
VFM 3/5 ( a wee bit expensive)
But yes give it a try once atleast for their pizzas!
Having read all good reviews about the place..i decided to give it a try... however, sadly, the expectations werent fulfilled...
the ambience is nice and calm ..however the food is what disappoints....
i had ordered a basil pesto pizza 9" ...it serves one and the taste was really bad...the toppings were sparingly used...with each slice having a leaf of basil, one olive and couple of pieces of paneer..the taste was bland and the price was too much for what we got..i also ordered a pasta, in penne...which was served in spaghetti.. (they replaced it on request without fuss) but the mess up lead to a lot of waiting for the correct thing to be served... after spending quite a lot..the meal wasnt satisfactory and the damages were not worth it!!
my rating is only for the ambience..because as far as the taste and prices are concerned..i would easily skip the place...a dominos would have been a much better, fulfilling and reasonable option....
