User Reviews for High Spirits
Went there yesterday with some colleagues, we had heard it was a great place to hang out, drink and have a good time in general.
The indoor area was under renovation so we could not get a chance to check it out, but hey it was evening time in Pune and the outdoors is as pleasant a cool evening in England. The crowd there was youngsters and young working professionals, laughing and drinking merrily as they sipped their drinks without a care in the world, such an ambiance immediately puts one at ease and gets one in the mood to enjoy a drink! They have intimate places, tucked away in little corners...very nice!!!
They have a happy hours which we decided to avail of, all cocktails priced between 300 to 400 for 200, wow what a steal!!! We started off with a mojito and caiproska, the bartender was very quick at preparing them. We found the drinks a little too sweet for our palate but they were potent so who cares??
We happened to speak to the bar in charge a very friendly person with the right attitude!!! He told us about their new cocktails, we gauged through the menu and found the Clint Eastwood to be interesting it's a cigar smoked cocktail (made from Jameson whiskey, concentrated coffee and angostura bitters) we liked the whole theatric of the way it was prepared, however there was no flavour of the cigar. I feel they should have infused it with a spirit.
All said and done, it's a great place to hang out and it's not cheap however it's not as expensive as the other bars in town. They do band nights on Fridays and Sundays and movie nights followed by a DJ on Thursdays ...will definitely visit again!!!
As a keen follower of standup comedy around the world and across eras, I've been keenly following the boom in the Indian stand-up scene in the last couple of years. In this regard, High Spirits has been a key enabler in this boom by hosting some well known indian comics (and sometimes international, like the peerless Andy Zaltzman) biweekly every alternate Wednesday.
Most of my trips to High Spirits have been on these Wednesday nights, and people from all corners of Pune congregate here to have a laugh or two, aided of course by copious amounts of alcohol. Their open air ambience has grown onto me, and is what sets them apart from other clubs. Lots of fresh air with no chance of claustrophobia inducing bumps with other sweaty souls on a weekday; and nice classic rock playing in the background instead of that EDM thingy that is the rage these days.
By this point it would take no rocket scientist to conclude that food is nowhere near my primary focus when I visit High Spirits. Having said that, some of their starters are pretty scrumptious. I quite like their satays, (crunchy juicy grilled chicken served with their version of a nice peanut sauce), their chicken wings, achari tikkas and tempuras. I've heard rave reviews of their Sunday cookout and its only a matter of time before I go try that.
Finally visited High Spirits which is well known to be among the best places to chill out in Pune and was not disappointed at all. We were lucky enough to visit on a Saturday Night with the very famous Anushka Manchanda playing with her band. The place felt great with Pune's best crowd I have ever come across. It didn't take long for the Beers and the Long Island Iced Tea to make us dance and soak into the buzzing surroundings. The starters were good and the service was prompt as well. High Spirits has a long list of daily event happening and I would love to be there with my friends in the future,
Good Job High Spirits! Keep rocking!
We came here to watch the StandUp Comedy Show, held on alternate Wednesdays & the place totally rocked our evening.
The variety of cocktails available were great and we tried out several drinks, previously unheard of. There was also an offer where if we win a coin toss with the bartender, we get 1+1 free drinks. We unfortunately lost all 7 tosses we played, but the bartender was kind enough to offer us 4 free consolation drinks.
The starters were also great, especially the Chicken Wok, which was surely the best I've ever eaten.
The place gets pretty cramped at night, but the good food & drink, more than makes up for it.
This definitely is one of the places, one should frequent for a good night out.
I'm writing this review at 3:06 AM by the clock. Arrived back home from High Spirits after what was, quite frankly, an amazing night.
In the two years that I've spent in Pune, I haven't really been to High Spirits that often. I always wondered what it was about the place that people loved so much. Like a potent blend of alcohol, this place climbs up your 'party spine' slowly, but steadily. My colleagues from work, and my friends from college come here quite often, and I did tag along with them a couple of times, but, as High Spirits say quite well themselves, I never really "came to the High!"
Over the past two months, I've been to this place often, and I must say, each time, there's something new to fall in love with. Like the rudimentary but amazingly refreshing watery spray that they have running above the bar outside - trust me, whoever built that is a genius, because there's nothing more relaxing and refreshing than a cool breeze on your face when you're enjoying some good conversations with friends over a pint of beer. Or the bartenders and waiters, who, regardless of whether you're a first timer or a regular, will always greet you with a smile on their face, and a perceptible nod of their heads - it's almost as if they're happy to see you there, which is what every patron absolutely loves! Of all the clubs/lounges/pubs that I've been to around the city - and I've been to quite a few - High Spirits is the only place where the bouncers and the reps at the front desk won't scowl at you and curtly dismiss you if they don't recognize you - they are courteous, but firm enough and always willing to accommodate people.
Now a bit about the decor...I'm not much of an artist or a critic of interior designing, but the decor won me over the first time I went there. High Spirits - the two words insinuate fun, joy and sharing some good moments and creating even better memories. "The High" does exactly that. The first thing you see when you walk in is a table tennis table on the left. Now, I can tell you that when you're sufficiently inebriated, you will most certainly want to burn some steam off, and of course, show off your superiority with the paddle! Ha! That TT table has been a really good source of entertainment for me every time I've been here. The second thing you'll notice is the greenery around - a much-needed digression from the stuffy interiors at the other clubs/pubs around the city. The seating area in the courtyard outside has plenty of room, both for people who like to grab a seat and accommodates those standing with ease as well. There is an indoor dance floor, entry into which is restricted to 'couples' only, which seems fair enough. The DJ plays in a small cubicle there, right along with the guests, which seems quite good to me, since he's right there and doesn't seem inaccessible, as is the case with most other clubs around. There are two bars - one outside, and one inside, which serve almost every drink one can think of. The graffiti on the walls is insane (for lack of better words)! Any review without any complaints seems like a doctored one, so here's mine - I find the placement of the tables a little difficult to get around once the place starts getting crowded, but some minor readjustments should probably take care of that.
What sets High Spirits apart from its 'competitors', if one might call them that, is its sheer versatility. High Spirits is renowned, if not revered, for its live music, but you won't feel completely out of place if you're looking for commercial, party popping music as well, as they have a healthy balance of both.
The food is well made, and the menu is quite decently packed and priced. Ingredients are fresh, and some of their dishes (Chicken Lollipops, Pizzas anyone?) are amazing.
On a concluding note, I find High Spirits the perfect place for almost any kind of getaway you could think of - partying it out with your college buddies, having a good dinner-cum-drinks session with your colleagues from work, or just meeting interesting new people. The next item on my to-do list is to attend their cookout on Sunday (which they hold every weekend, if I'm not wrong), and if any of you happen to be there, well, rest assured that you'll have a fantastic time.
