Barone Pizzini, "Animante", NV
Champagne has a rival- the Italian sparkling wine zone Franciacorta. Not just following, but enforcing even stricter laws than Champagne, Franciacorta proves itself an apt competitor in the contest of the world's greatest sparkling wines. Using Pinot Nero, Pinot Bianco, and Chardonnay, the region remains relatively obscure, awarding its followers with great value. Barone Pizzini has been a leader in natural farming and consistently represents quality and pride for these great Lombardian wines

Manincor, "Réserve della Contessa", 2006
Often lost in the shadow of Italy's world renown red wines, Italian white grapes have struggled to share the stage among that of France, Germany or Austria. Often slighted for being overly lean and floral in their youth, Italian white wine is rarely given the opportunity to mature in the bottle. This "field blend" of the historic Terlano zone, driven by the Pinot Bianco grape, has been resting for 10 years in bottle offering a more elegant texture while still maintaining a refined freshness

Romano Clelia, "Colli di Lapio", 2013
Situated in the mountainous slopes of Campania, the Colli di Lapio estate is considered the most promising vineyard for one of Italy's most prized white varietals, Fiano. The high-elevation, calcareous soils of the Lapio village produce wine of elegance and vibrance, echoing qualities of Grand Cru Chablis

Soliste, "Lune et Soleil", Lake County, 2013
Of the fruit-driven wines of Lake County, some of the country's finest Sauvignon is crafted by Burgundy native Claude Koeberle. Lifted by the laurels of his late friend Didier Dagueneau, Koeberle stylizes his wine to pay homage to the intense and terroir-driven whites of the Loire Valley. Taking its passion one step further, the winery dispersed a tractor-trailer worth of broken oyster shells in its vineyards for a dose of extra maritime minerality

Azelia, 2012
This historic winery run by the lauded Scavino family combines both power and elegance through maniacal attention to detail in the vineyards. The vines used for this wine are an average age of 40 years and produce very low yields - which suits the mission well, as in the economy of viticulture, less is more! Greater concentration, ripeness, and aromatic complexity create the ideal experience in the glass, or if you prefer, a party in the mouth

Produttori del Barbaresco, 2012
Communal wineries in the modern era have never risen to a level of excellence, with the exception of one. Produttori del Barbaresco returns to a time when no Barbaresco producer owned enough land - or equipment to make its own wine. Instead they banded together, compiling the fruits of their labor, to make the single best wine possible. The tradition has continued for decades, and will hopefully continue for decades to come

La Meridiana, "Quattro Terre", 2014
In the Langhe hills Nebbiolo rules supreme with its' stunning Barolos and Barbarescos grown on the southern slopes of Alba. Across the valley in Asti, little known Barbera is planted to those treasured southern exposures, or Sori. One of the leaders of the region, La Meridiana, produces incredible wine from four soils, or "Quattro Terre". Birthed from soils of limestone, sandstone, sand, and clay, the wine demonstrates the potential finesse of the region

Brunello di Montalcino has risen to be the premier interpretation of Tuscan Sangiovese. Full in body, this wine expresses all of the traditional flavors one expects from the varietal such as pure cherry fruit, chocolate notes, and a dark earthiness. The resulting wine is a more pronounced, luxurious bottling that only the town of Montalcino can provide

Le Ragnaie, 2013
The Ragnaie vineyard in Montalcino is the origin of some of the region's most beloved expressions of Brunello. This particular wine is a result of the many intricate, even peculiar, laws of government regulated wine production. Since the grapes come from above the 600 meter threshold designated to Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino, the wine is declassified to Chianti Colli Senesi. All other things being equal, this "loophole" of sorts provides a hidden gem for the value-seeking lover of Tuscan Sangiovese

Ca' Marcanda (Gaja), "Promis", 2014
Angelo Gaja, owner of the most prestigious winery in Piedmont (perhaps in all of Italy), began a new winemaking venture called Ca'Marcanda in 1996. The picturesque coastal region Maremma, from which the wine hails, boasts the ideal climate for growing international grape varieties. Combining elegance, suppleness, and austerity, this delightful wine confirms a welcomed, even awaited, Piemontese entrance to the Super Tuscan stage

The Veneto is home to some of Italy's finest and most interesting wines. Marchesi Biscardo combines modern farming with the classic 'Recioto' style to showcase the potential of wine in the valleys outside Verona

Colli di Salerno, Montevetrano, 2012
Montevetrano takes its name from the medieval castle still remaining on their famed estate dating back to Roman times. The wine benefits from its coastal location and mild climate creating perfect tension where power and elegance meet in the glass. Production of this nectar of Campania is strictly limited and has reached "cult wine" status for Italian wine aficionados across the world. Montevetrano confidently proclaims what the often under-appreciated region of Campania offers to the world of fine wine

Freeman, Russian River Valley, 2013
Ken and Akiko Freeman are relative newcomers to the Sonoma Pinot scene. A swirl and a sip are all you need to see why they have developed such a lauded reputation in a short time. The couple endeavored to challenge the stereotype of what had become "traditional" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. The Freemans believed the right location and right techniques in Russian River could produce wines not only generous in fruit, but generous in complexity and minerality - much like their beloved Burgundy Pinot Noirs. Almost 15 years later, the small winery is still going strong, celebrating a number of accolades and having had one of its wines served at a recent White House State Dinner

Hoopes, Napa Valley, 2012
Hoopes has always been able to showcase the greatness of Oakville, but in a fuller bodied fashion than their neighbors, especially in the epicness that was 2012. Although the 1983 vintage is better known for people (read: RPM sommeliers), it was also the year Hoopes family planted their Oakville vineyard. Twenty-nine years later, the vines were producing full bodied Napa Cabernet with elegance to match their power

"Juvenile", California, 2014
Often unfortunately mistaken for it's pink (yes, even boxed) counterpart, Zinfandel has become rightfully restored to it's full potential as a serious wine. This feat can largely be credited to the Turley family, who have built a Zin dynasty on multiple small vineyards, allowing for more expressive wines with a sense of place. As the name suggests, "Juvenile" is made from younger vines, sourced from several of Turley's famed vineyards, providing for a colorful and vibrant expression of Zinfandel

Pupillo, "Pollio", 2009
Moscato di Siracusa has a long history of being one of the world's finest dessert wines. It is Italy's oldest wine, with origins dating back to the Greek colonization of Sicily in the 8th century BC. Despite its pedigree, it was nearly extinct for almost a century. Recently, though, the Pupillo family revived this cherished wine, restoring Moscato di Siracusa's golden reputation

The restaurant itself was incredibly aesthetically pleasing. The chic black&white decor ran throughout, making it an elegant experience.
The food itself was incredible. We started with the Fresh Homemade Ricotta with Ciabatta Roast, and the RPM Caesar Wedge sans anchovies, both of which were incredibly light, crisp and delicious. The Bucatini and Gnocchi were both simply flavoured and delicious. We usually skip dessert at restaurants, but the server told us about their special Bomboloni, which we couldn't refuse. It came hot and puffy, coated with coarse sugars and alongside whipped cream, a nutella spread, and a lemon meringue spread.
RPM will always be a go-to when i'm in Chicago. I wish they had it in Toronto.
Some of favorite dishes include: Lobster caprese (literally this is a MUST get here), fresh homemade ricotta, truffled garlic bread, Mama DePandi's bucatini, papperdelle bolognese, and the handmade cavatelli.
If you're interested in having a romantic date night or celebrating a special occasion this is a perfect spot! I say this because it is a bit on the pricier side.

Next we had the Roman Style Artichokes. They were beautifully fried, but the aioli was a little lack luster.
We each ordered a pasta, and we rotated them around the table so that everyone could try them all. We conveniently ordered three very different pastas: I had the Mushroom Sagnarelli with a rich and creamy wild mushroom sauce, Christine who is currently obsessed with all things fall had the Pumpkin Agnolotti with crispy prosciutto and capers, and Jen had the Pappardelle Bolognese with pecorino.
The Mushroom Sagarelli was the richest and creamiest of the pastas. It was also my favorite. It was topped with big chunks of meaty mushrooms. The Pumpkin Agnolotti was the second best, the pumpkin didn’t overpower the dish and the prosciutto lent a nice saltiness. I wasn’t convinced by the capers, they stood out just a bit too much. The Pappardelle Bolognese was solid but it wasn’t much compared to the Short Rib Ragu at Eataly.
We finished things off with mini doughnuts with nutella and mascarpone. The doughnuts were light, fluffy and served warm so that the nutella and mascarpone melted over them.
