Absolutely delicious dry-fried chicken wings!I finally got to try the famous San Tung dry-fried chicken wings and, be still my heart, it was LOVE at first bite! The wings were fairly large, fried super crispy with a light batter, then drenched with a generous amount of this garlic/ginger/chili pepper flake sauce...So so addictive that I think I might have devoured half a plate of those sweet, savory, sticky wings all by myself! (Yes, feel free to judge me online strangers :P)
Also had the Pork Dumplings - eh, were just okay. These dumplings are of the thicker skin type and served boiled. While they may have looked plump and juicy, I felt the pork filling had a little bit of a bitter aftertaste...overall, not a fan.
The combination Chow Mein, on the other hand, was good - better than most of the chow mein I've had at other Chinese restaurants in SF. Also worth getting are their Sauteed String Beans, tender and crispy fresh with a nicely charred taste - very yummy!
Sang Tung holds true to their reputation for long lines, though. Evidence? Our starving group of 6 came just a little before 5 and smartly thought we would beat the dinner crowd. Nope, wrong - we still had to wait an hour before we got seated.
Worth it though, in my opinion~

Well, I hate to be the first negative review, but I have to be honest - Sam Tung's has ONLY one big thing going for it, if you have read all the other positive reviews - and that is, Chicken. Wet or dry. Period. The high rating peaked my interest and I tried going on a Saturday night, but the line was way too long. So, of course, I am thinking, "Wow, could this be my new favorite Chinese restaurant in my favorite city?" So, came back on Sunday and, remarkably, there was no line. Even the "veterans" standing next to me - who raved about the chicken - were surprised, too.
Okay, good sign. Got seated in a hurry - but, then had to wait for quite a while before someone showed up to take an order. Without blinking, one order each of the "wet" and "dry" chicken, along with some pot stickers and Mu Shu Pork. The "wet" came out first and, yes, very delicious. The pork came out second (hey, what happened to the pot stickers?) and it was just okay - a little too much oil and not a lot of flavor. Then, the "dry" chicken appeared; but, wait a minute, they looked "wet" to me even thought the server assured me they were dry. Okay, but what about all this noise about "spicy, spicy, spicy?" Nada, nada, nada. Finally, the pot stickers came out - but, other than the size, they were not impressive at all; in fact, probably the worse I have had.
The service as so-so and - other than the chicken - everything else was so-so which leads to the 3 rating. Not bad, but I don't feel any need to come back any time soon.
Oh, by the way, because the wings were covered in this gooey honey sauce, I went to the washroom to clean my hands. There was a short wait, and, in front of me, there was this little kid jumping up in the air to swat at something above his head on the walls in this tiny hallway between the eating area and the washrooms. Naturally, I looked up and - WTH? There were dozens and dozens of these tiny black flies crawling all over the wall and ceiling. If I had seen those little bugs before I ate, I would have left right then. Oh, well. As I left, I couldn't help but notice that two of the servers had a few bitty black specks crawling on the back of their white shirts. You can probably guess what they were. Needless to say, the rating went from 3 to 2.5.
So much for high ratings. You just never no sometimes until you try a place. If you like chicken wings with the possibility of some added protein, go! If you want some other Chinese good, then send me a comment, and I will recommend some other places to try in San Francisco.

If you stumble into San Tung and don't know what to order just look around. You'll notice that everyone has fried chicken wings on their table, and for good reason. The wings here are amazing and worth the trip alone. On top of that they make great handmade dumplings as well. Go here, order wings, and your day will be complete.
