Visiting SF from NC. This was very unique and the best food I can remember. Get there early. It was a long wait on a Tuesday. We sat at the bar which was the best seat in the house. They passed around small portions for you to try. Don't worry they had the prices on the tray. Quail was spectacular. Guinnea hen dumplings were to die for. My wife even raved over the charred octopus. A must try.

Love the yum cha/dim sum approach, as it allows you to actually see a lot of the dishes before choosing them. And it also means you're fed pretty quickly. Service is cheerful and brisk, and the staff are totally on their game. But considering the immense difficulty in getting a reservation, the queues outside, and how wonderfully the menu reads, I'd have expected the flavours to leave a greater impression on me

Food was amazing - waiters walking various appetizers around meant you got food quickly and often and by and large everything was excellent - the exception being the seafood but probably should have known that anyway.  The Quail was amazing as were the desserts.  Nice was a slight issue and there was a very slight feeling of being rushed.  However would definitely go back.

This place came highly recommended, so like good little tourists, we went early and queued up. There was a 15 person queue 30 mins prior to opening! The food is tapas style - small portions. Great idea so you get to try a lot of variety. It's also a little yum cha style because the wait staff being trays and trolleys of the food for you to choose from. Nice ambiance, friendly staff - you'd think it was great right? Not so. Not for us. Most of the dishes were a miss for us. Very few hits. The menu is great, a lot of innovation behind the dishes but just don't think they executed them all that well. Could be just us as everyone else seems to love this place. Anyway, my two cents worth :)
Lives up to the hype. We were at State Bird with a couple of friends yesterday night, with an immediate reservation from Luka.ai. The guys have a great offer, getting you a table in exchange of downloading their new restaurant mobile guide (found it here: ow.ly/ILTiU). It's all instead of waiting for two months after having luck of getting a reservation by phone.

We were three people, and it was our first time here. What I can say is just: Oh. My. God. That was a perfect evening with awesome food, great service, and pretty hip vibe.

There were four or five guys passing by and offering small plates $3 to $12 each. You can skip or take one or several things. We tried almost everything, but we all totally fell in love with duck liver mousse with almond biscuits. That was literally a thing to die for.

As for drinks, we had the only French option on the white wine list, which worked pretty well with a variety of fish and seafood dishes we tried.

State bird provisions great experience. A night at SBP with friends turned out to be more than just great food. It was a unique dining experience, combining the best of a westernized food dim sum, with some ordering off of the menu. staff went out of their way to be friendly and welcoming, and explaining each of the dozen different dishes offered on the carts. the food was superb and interesting combinations never seen before. and save room for the desserts which were also a highlight.

Gustatory. What a great, exhilarating, tasty and satisfying meal. The five of us sampled from eighteen out of twenty-one dim sum-like offerings, you may want to call them tapas portions. The three we did not eat looked good, but we had them recently, could make them at home, and were more conventional. The exotic excites us including steak tartare on puffed rice paper, quail eggs, duck ham, duck liver mousse, smoked trout-avocado, accompanied by little vegetable portions of kohlrabi kraut, kimchi, pickled squash and mash ups that tasted oh so yummy. Getting in without a reservation had us standing in line at 4 pm for a 5:30 table. You might think this meal was pricey, good news, not as lofty as I expected. Had a tasty Greek red, closed with French press Blue Bottle Coffee and a port like Barolo Chinato.

Wicked sauce! Really!!. I guess we just lucked out, we had no idea how good this restaurant was going to be and just went on a recommendation from a stranger. We waited 20 minutes to get a seat which apparently isn't long at all for this place. In return we were greeted by friendly and professional staff who clearly show they have a passion for food and wine. The concept of having food carts bombing around the restaurant offering small plates is a great way to eat, or to satisfy your taste buds while you wait for a dish you just ordered off the menu. My partner and I found ourselves opening up to plates that we would normally not even bat an eye at on a menu sheet, for example... Salmon tartar, beef tartar, rabbit ragu. But all of them continually exceeded each other as we moved along through the night. Dessert was absolutely amazing, and I fear that I will now do whatever it takes to get the recipe for what I had (birdseed something or other). I also wanted to... read more

Excellent execution on a popular concept. Several restaurants have adopted the concept that State Bird Provisions uses for food service. But what State Bird has in it's favor is excellent execution. The dishes are consistently well thought out, assembled, and presented. About the only thing I would like to see done differently is one or two dishes with a bit more of an edge to them. I am not suggesting that they re-do their menu, but it would be nice to see something that is very unusual, or common items prepared in a way that surprises.

Fun staff, fun food. I really am wowed by the experience at SBP. The food was spot on, with some highs and lows of course with some dishes knocking it out of the park and others being 'okay'. The staff looked like they were having fun interacting with guests and made us feel like part of the team (we even got to walk through the open kitchen). The peg board on the walls only adds to the creative feel you see on the menu and the playfulness you see with the food combinations. Definitely will be returning!!!
