Visiting SF from NC. This was very unique and the best food I can remember. Get there early. It was a long wait on a Tuesday. We sat at the bar which was the best seat in the house. They passed around small portions for you to try. Don't worry they had the prices on the tray. Quail was spectacular. Guinnea hen dumplings were to die for. My wife even raved over the charred octopus. A must try.

Love the yum cha/dim sum approach, as it allows you to actually see a lot of the dishes before choosing them. And it also means you're fed pretty quickly. Service is cheerful and brisk, and the staff are totally on their game. But considering the immense difficulty in getting a reservation, the queues outside, and how wonderfully the menu reads, I'd have expected the flavours to leave a greater impression on me

Food was amazing - waiters walking various appetizers around meant you got food quickly and often and by and large everything was excellent - the exception being the seafood but probably should have known that anyway. The Quail was amazing as were the desserts. Nice was a slight issue and there was a very slight feeling of being rushed. However would definitely go back.

This place came highly recommended, so like good little tourists, we went early and queued up. There was a 15 person queue 30 mins prior to opening! The food is tapas style - small portions. Great idea so you get to try a lot of variety. It's also a little yum cha style because the wait staff being trays and trolleys of the food for you to choose from. Nice ambiance, friendly staff - you'd think it was great right? Not so. Not for us. Most of the dishes were a miss for us. Very few hits. The menu is great, a lot of innovation behind the dishes but just don't think they executed them all that well. Could be just us as everyone else seems to love this place. Anyway, my two cents worth :)
Lives up to the hype. We were at State Bird with a couple of friends yesterday night, with an immediate reservation from Luka.ai. The guys have a great offer, getting you a table in exchange of downloading their new restaurant mobile guide (found it here: ow.ly/ILTiU). It's all instead of waiting for two months after having luck of getting a reservation by phone.
We were three people, and it was our first time here. What I can say is just: Oh. My. God. That was a perfect evening with awesome food, great service, and pretty hip vibe.
There were four or five guys passing by and offering small plates $3 to $12 each. You can skip or take one or several things. We tried almost everything, but we all totally fell in love with duck liver mousse with almond biscuits. That was literally a thing to die for.
As for drinks, we had the only French option on the white wine list, which worked pretty well with a variety of fish and seafood dishes we tried.
The general tip: It's all about sharing here. The more you share, the more you try. The best strategy is to come with a bigger party. At the end we were completely full, so no one could even have a dessert.
The only complaint might be that State Bird has no idea how to brew coffee. All they have is a French press which is actually a good French press. However, a double espresso at the end of a dinner would be the ideal finale
