I made two trips here in the span of a week and didn't leave disappointed either time. I always start with basics when it comes to new restaurants that I plan to visit more than once because if they can't get the basics down nothing else is going to match up either. Had the lasagne and it was excellent! Perfect balance of meat/cheese/sauce which isn't always easy to create. Asked for Red Pepper flakes but instead they brought cayenne which is standard and it added the perfect punch. Knowledgable staff that helped with wine selection as well. Two excellent meals here!

Great Italian restaurant in Capitol Hill. Osteria La Spiga exists, for me, between Spinasse (on the high end) and Machiavelli (on the affordable end) as far as Italian food goes on Capitol Hill. If you want a stand out, knock your socks off Italian dinner - go to Spinasse. If you just want a glass of wine and some pasta - go to Machiavelli.La Spiga's dishes were quite good - the fried polenta was my favorite - and our server provided a great wine recommendation for the table. My parents were in town too, and this was a great pick for dinner with them. There were plenty of dishes that we could share, but also others that we could keep to ourselves. It wasn't too noisy so conversation was easy, which is impressive since my parents are fairly sensitive to things like that.
Overall, it's a solid Italian restaurant for Capitol Hill.

The welcome:
The hostess was a bit, frosty, and also not dressed in what I would call appropriate attire for hostess in an establishment of this level.
She also needs to learn to deal with one person/group at a time. Deal with me, then you can ask the next person if they have a reservation, just rude.
We were seated (by someone else) at a table that was WAY too low! I am 5'11, and could not get my legs under it, and the chairs were really uncomfortable.
A busboy came quickly to fill our water glasses, but the water was warm.
Ambiance:
The place is "rustic", big open space, really crappy lighting. We had to use an flashlight app on our phones to read it.
Service:
Our server was OK, not too friendly, but at least a step up from the hostess. When we asked about separate checks, were were told that house rules only allowed for one check per table (I really want to do advanced math, in the dark on a Saturday night).
It took forever to get bread, and get our orders in. Appetizers came out slowly, at least together. The mains came out piecemeal. And since we have manners, some of us ate cold food, since we waited for everyone to be served to start eating.
Since the server was not the one serving the mains, there was lots of confusion over who got what, again, at these prices, just sloppy.
Server only came by one to check on us, but did not seem very enthusiastic.
The food:
In a word, underwhelming. The appetizers were ok, nothing special. The beef tongue was too thinly sliced, and too pickled. The potato and saffron soup was watery. Everything tasted over-seasoned. The bread they served seemed like some weird type of naan, and came without any olive oil or butter to spread or dip into.
The mains, were the worst. Firstly, serve hot food on warm plates!!! Everything came on COLD plates. The pasta dishes were odd. Tortelli (ravioli) were tough, the lasagna looked like a portion I would have served a child, and did not have real "layers" to it.
Those who ordered the pasta dishes, left most of it over. Two of us ordered the "Spice Cured" beef tenderloin, in a preparation that I have never seen before. It looked like Ahi, did not have the taste or texture of beef. And again, WAY over seasoned. The menu should have some sort of warning.
No one finished their mains, given the portion sizes (tiny), you get the idea that they were not good.
We all ordered desert, most of us had the chocolate hazelnut "Tartufo", it was their version, which means... we do it as we please. No coating of anything, gelato was ok, if not grainy, and they filling was some weird raw-tasting hazelnut cookie thing.
All in all, it was disappointing. The only bright spot (haha no lighting), was that the server split the check, although that came with a lecture that she was nice enough to do it, but that not to expect it next time.
Ouch!
Customer is always... wrong I guess at La Spiga.
Yet another Seattle restaurant with Seattle Restaurant Attitude Disorder (SRAD), we are so awesome, that no matter how crappily we treat you, how expensive the food or badly it is presented, served or tastes, we are just AWESOME.
Not!

Italian Food Convert. I've never liker Italian food very much--unless I'm in Italy at a friend's house. This is because so many restaurants that claim to be Italian douse their food in carbs, cheese, and heavy sauces. La Spiga, however, is divine! I never feel heavy after eating here. And I have never been disappointed by anything I've tried. I brought a friend here during her book tour and she still talks about going back when she visits next. I don't make a lot of money, but I actually put money aside in my budget just to eat here.
